U.S. Teams Earn Medals At Pan Ams

All six U.S water ski teams – Elite, Under 21, Junior, Under 13, Veteran 1 and Veteran 2 – competing in the 2010 Pan American Water Ski Championships earned medals at the biennial event, Nov. 22-28, in San Bernardo, Chile. Athletes on the six U.S. teams combined to win 67 individual medals, including 26 of a possible 48 gold medals.

The U.S. Elite Water Ski Team won the overall team gold medal, tallying 8,259.41 points. Canada earned the silver medal with 7,904.69 points and Chile earned the bronze medal with 6,421.69 points.

Members of the U.S. Elite Team were Rhoni Barton-Bischoff (Orlando, Fla.), Danyelle Bennett (Zachary, La.), Caroline Hensley (Hixson, Tenn.), Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.), Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Jon Travers (Groveland, Fla.). Jaquess won gold medals in women's slalom (1 buoy at 39-1/2 feet off), tricks (7,830 points) and jumping (167 feet), and the silver medal in overall (2,867.52 points). Barton-Bischoff earned the silver medal in women's slalom (3 buoys at 38 feet off). Bennett earned silver medals in women's tricks (7,820 points) and jumping (153 feet), and the bronze medal in overall (2,607.58 points). Krueger won the gold medal in men's jumping (221 feet). Travers earned the silver medal in men's slalom (3-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off).

The U.S. Under 21 Water Ski Team earned the overall team silver medal, scoring 7,507.16 points. Canada won the gold medal with 7,908.2 points and Colombia earned the bronze medal with 7,341.58 points.

Members of the U.S. Under 21 Team were: Storm Selsor (Fremont, Calif.), Keri McClure (Van Wert, Ohio), Steven Brooks (Canyon Lake, Calif.) and Brittany Greenwood (Little Rock, Ark.). McClure won the gold medal in women's slalom (1-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off) and earned the bronze medal in overall (2,392.53 points). Selsor won the gold medal in men's jumping (194 feet) and earned the silver medal in slalom (3 buoys at 38 feet off) and the bronze medal in overall (2,473.26 points). Brooks earned the bronze medal in men's slalom (1 buoy at 38 feet off). Greenwood earned the silver medal in women's jumping (144 feet).

The U.S. Under 13 Water Ski Team won the overall team gold medal, tallying 8,080.35 points. Colombia earned the silver medal with 3,574.85 points and Mexico earned the bronze medal with 3,438.95 points.

Members of the U.S. Under 13 Team were: Julianna Boskus (Elkins, Ark.), Taylor Garcia (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), Nicholas Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Grace "Kat" Warner (Dallas, Texas).Warner won the gold medal in girls' slalom (2 buoys at 32 feet off), and earned silver medals in jumping (83 feet) and overall (2,862.58 points), and the bronze medal in tricks (3,320 points). Boskus won the gold medal in girls' jumping (84 feet) and overall (2,913.58 points), and earned silver medals in slalom (1 buoy at 32 feet off) and tricks (3,720 points). Garcia won the gold medal in boys' jumping (122 feet), and earned silver medals in slalom (3 buoys at 35 feet off) and overall (2,814.63 points), and the bronze medal in tricks (3,060 points). Lang won the gold medal in boys' overall (2,904.19 points) and earned silver medals in boys' tricks (3,990 points) and jumping (115 feet), and the bronze medal in slalom (2-1/2 buoys at 35 feet off).

The U.S. Junior Water Ski Team earned the overall team silver medal, tallying 7,576.49 points. Colombia won the gold medal, scoring 7,656.68 points and Canada earned the bronze medal with 5,486.50 points.

Members of the U.S. Junior Team were: Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.), Kevin Malak (Justin, Texas), Haywood McDonald (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) and Lauren Morgan (Odessa, Fla.). Lang won the gold medal in girls' tricks (7,840 points) and earned silver medals in jumping (108 feet) and overall (2,432.33 points). McDonald won the gold medal in boys' tricks (6,530 points) and the bronze medal in overall (2,390.65 points). Morgan won the gold medal in girls' jumping (150 feet) and overall (2,570.15 points), and earned the silver medal in slalom (1 buoys at 35 feet off) and the bronze medal in tricks 4,410 points).  

The U.S. Veteran 1 Water Ski Team won the overall team gold medal, scoring 7,752.01 points. Mexico earned the silver medal with 5,192.04 points and Argentina earned the bronze medal with 2,938.16 points.

Members of the U.S. Veteran 1 Team (ages 35-44) were: Forest Fisher (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.), Sandy Knight (Lake St. Louis, Mo.), Tony Knight (Lake Saint Louis, Mo.), and Marc Shaw (Orlando, Fla.). Shaw won gold medals in men's slalom (3 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off), tricks (5,250 points), jumping (191 feet) and overall (3,000.0 points). Tony Knight earned silver medals in men's slalom (5 buoys at 35 feet off) and jumping (173 feet), and the bronze medal in overall (2,089.99 points). Sandy Knight won the gold medal in women's jumping and overall (3,00.0 points), and earned silver medals in slalom (1-1/2 buoys at 28 feet off) and tricks (2,220 points). Fisher earned the silver medal in men's tricks (4,160 points).

The U.S. Veteran 2 Water Ski Team won the overall team gold medal, scoring 7,817.81 points. Canada earned the silver medal with 5,118.07 points and Brazil earned the bronze medal with 3,996.10 points.

Members of the U.S. Veteran 2 Team (ages 45 and over) were: Beverly Abbott (Santa Fe, Texas), Janie Fausold (Pleasant Grove, Calif.), Connie Morris (San Diego, Calif.) and Mitch Grau (Carrollton, Texas). Morris won gold medals in women's slalom (1 buoy at 35 feet off), jumping (90 feet) and overall (2,830.19 points), and the silver medal in tricks (2,640 points. Fausold won the gold medal in women's tricks (2,700 points), earned silver medals in jumping (80 feet) and overall (2,326.19 points), and the bronze medal in slalom (5 buoys at 22 feet off). Abbott earned bronze medals in women's tricks (1,280 points), jumping (70 feet) and overall (1,942.28 points). Grau earned silver medals in men's jumping (149 feet) and overall (2,079.82 points).  

Lori Krueger (Santa Fe, Texas) and Jeff Surdej (Wilmington, Ill.) were the coaches; Jim Grew (Winter Haven, Fla.) was the team manager; Surdej also served as assistant manager; and Dr. Marc Aiken (Johnson City, Tenn.) was the team physician.

At the 2008 Pan American Championships in Medellin, Colombia, all six teams won gold medals, while U.S. athletes combined to win 68 individual medals, including 33 of a possible 48 gold medals.
